DOST, CSU’s C-Trike: A Game-Changer for Green Transportation in Tuguegarao

The Electromobility Research and Development Center (EMRDC) of Cagayan State University (CSU) is set to introduce an eco-friendly alternative to traditional tricycles—the C-Trike, a fully electric, zero-emission vehicle designed to cut costs and reduce pollution in Tuguegarao City and beyond.

According to CSU Campus Research Coordinator Michael Orpilla, initial talks have been held with the Federation of Tricycle Operators and Drivers Association (FETODA) in Tuguegarao. Moreover, the group is awaiting a local ordinance that will regulate the use of converted electric tricycles.

With over 7,000 franchised tricycles and thousands more unregistered ones, most tricycles in Tuguegarao either run on 2-stroke or 4-stroke engines, both of which contribute significantly to air pollution.

CSU’s C-Trike conversion replaces the traditional mechanical engine with an electric power system, eliminating harmful emissions and offering substantial savings for drivers: 2-stroke engine costs ₱3.20 per kilometer and 4-stroke engine costs ₱2.30 per kilometer while C-Trike (electric) costs only about ₱0.88 per kilometer. With lower operating costs, tricycle drivers can increase their take-home income, making it a win-win solution for both the environment and the local transport sector.

The C-Trike project, funded by the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) Region 02, is part of CSU’s commitment to sustainable innovation. If more tricycles shift to electric alternatives, the transportation sector could achieve the global goal of cutting carbon emissions by 75% by 2030. Through embracing clean energy transportation, Tuguegarao City has the potential to lead the way in sustainable urban mobility, setting an example for other cities in the Philippines. PCO INKS MOA WITH CICC TO FIGHT FAKE NEWS

Presidential Communications Office (PCO) Secretary Jaybee C. Ruiz on Thursday signed a memorandum of agreement (MOA) with the Cybercrime Investigation and Coordinating Center (CICC) in the fight against fake news and misinformation.

“The PCO will fight against fake news through a whole-of-government approach,” Secretary Ruiz declared during the MOA signing with Cybercrime Investigation and Coordinating Center (CICC) Executive Director Undersecretary Alexander Ramos.

Ruiz said the PCO will also leverage the expertise of Scam Watch Pilipinas, a national cybersecurity movement dedicated to educating Filipinos on cyber fraud and addressing cybersecurity gaps at the grassroots level.

Ruiz hoped more agencies would join the campaign against fake news and misinformation.

“Fake news has become prevalent in recent times. It has become even stronger in the last weeks after former president Rodrigo Duterte was arrested by Interpol and brought to The Hague in the Netherlands to face allegations of crimes against humanity,” he said.

“Fighting fake news is the fight of our generation. We should all join hands and work together to win this fight,” he added.

The PCO has mandated all its attached agencies to designate dedicated fact-checking officers to strengthen internal mechanisms against spreading false information.

It has partnered with VERA Files to conduct training sessions to counter misinformation and disinformation. VERA Files is a verified fact-checking partner of Meta that works to debunk false claims circulating online.

The PCO also launched a Media and Information Literacy Campaign focused on educating the youth on assessing and validating information sources, helping them distinguish falsehoods from the truth. | PND

PBBM TO NEW BANGSAMORO LAWMAKERS: PROTECT GAINS OF THE PEACE PROCESS

President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. on Monday swore in the newly appointed members of the Parliament in the Bangsamoro Transition Authority (BTA) and reminded them of their duty to protect the gains of the peace process to ensure lasting peace in the region.

“With you at the helm, I am confident that you will continue to prove that the implementation of every single signed agreement—is a step towards long-lasting peace,” President Marcos said during the event in Malacañang.

“We have collectively achieved remarkable progress in the Bangsamoro peace process. It is our shared responsibility to protect these gains and to ensure their uninterrupted advancement,” the President said.

He said that the new Bangsamoro Parliament members will continue the aspirations of those who have longed for peace and self-governance.

He added that they will also be instrumental in creating a future built by and for the Bangsamoro people.

With their names on the line, President Marcos reminded the Bangsamoro Parliament officials they must ensure a just and progressive Bangsamoro region.

Despite the different faiths and histories that shaped the nation, the President said he expects diversity and difference to not hinder national solidarity.

“Let us remember that at the center of our national identity is a common thread that binds us: our longing for peace and for progress,” he said.

In performing their duties, government officials must embody the traits of a new Filipino: discipline, expertise, and love of country.

The president, Quoting Prophet Muhammad regarding public service, said the true essence of public service is serving Filipinos “with integrity and kindness.”

During its transition period, the Bangsamoro Parliament is the interim government in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM). Its term was established in 2019 following the ratification of Republic Act 11054 or the Bangsamoro Organic Law. | PND
