Basinal of SLSU Emerges Champion in the 30th PSQ CALABARZON Regional Championship

LIPA CITY, BATANGAS — Jerwynn F. Basinal, a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering student at Southern Luzon State University (SLSU), emerged as the champion of the 30th Philippine Statistics Quiz (PSQ) CALABARZON Regional Championship held on October 14, 2026.

Joining SLSU on the winners’ podium were Adrian Simon T. Jalimao of Cavite State University Main Campus, which secured the first runner-up, and Snowdane Nhack Y. Maquilan of the University of the Philippines Los Baños, which placed second runner-up.

The annual competition brought together the top five qualifiers from the provincial eliminations in each of the five provinces of CALABARZON—Batangas, Cavite, Laguna, Quezon, and Rizal—for a total of 25 student contestants who competed to demonstrate their knowledge and skills in statistics.

Organized by the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) Regional Statistical Services Office IV-A, the regional championship aims to promote statistical literacy and encourage students to appreciate the importance of statistics.

The 30th PSQ Regional Championship also supports the celebration of the 37th National Statistics Month (NSM), with the theme, “Tuklas Pilipinas: Statistics as Beacon Towards Inclusive, Resilient, and Sustainable Tourism.” By promoting statistical literacy and encouraging students to appreciate the value of data in understanding social and economic issues, the competition highlights how statistics serves as a beacon for informed decision-making and sustainable development. Through initiatives such as the PSQ, the PSA continues to empower the younger generation to become data-literate citizens who can contribute to building an inclusive, resilient, and sustainable Philippines.

As the regional champion, Jerwynn F. Basinal will advance to the National Finals of the 30th Philippine Statistics Quiz on November 6, 2026, where he will represent CALABARZON and compete against other regional champions from across the country.
